Day 2 - Christchurch II

In a Word.

Travel tip: Going to a whole new different country without proper planning can be good, but dont do it if you only have limited time.

Kia ora! greeted the German woman who also happened to be the wife of the local Maori chief. She then proceeded to tell us the story of Tane, the son who pushed the Father Sky and the Mother Earth away from their once dark embrace, creating the land we live on, and covering his Mother with trees and grass and mountains so she would not be naked.

She explained that ora meant healthy, well, and kia was just 'be', so kia ora actually means 'be healthy/be well'.

We were at the Kotane Maori cultural performance, during which we had an awesome experience watching the performance of the Maori people, complete with a modern acoustic guitar. The guitar, they explained, came later with time and was incorporated into the culture. They had a lot of performances, and they invited all the girls and women on stage to try and use the poi poi.

"That means, guys, you know whats coming next," said the Maori chief and he invited the men on stage next.

So yeah, thats Ian and me in the middle somewhere, I was abit lost cause I wasnt really listening to the short introduction he gave. Oh well.

After the Maori Performance, we went to go see some animals.

Check out the deer.

Woot

And the kuni kuni, kuni meaning fat, so this pig is literally fat.

Woot

Day 3 coming soon.
